Home Library Encyclopedia Topically Arrangged and Indexed Volume 6 Highlights of American History
This volume tells the story of America, not just the story of the United States, but the story of all the Americas from Canada to Cape Horn. To tell it, we have tried to capture the "highlights," the exciting moments of American history when decisions have changed the course of events. We have tried to bring the vitality of the people and events to this book, to make figures and deeds seem as alive as they actually were. Also, we have tried to include considerable recent history, which is still in the making. Although the events of the 20th century are too close to us to be analyzed with much perspective, they are so complex that they require careful study.
Compared to the Eastern Hemisphere, the Americas of the Western Hemisphere are mere children, for their story begins not thousands of years ago but only a few centuries back. Nonetheless, these few centuries have seen momentous changes, of which the discovery of the New World by Europeans was one of the most important.
Today we again stand on the threshold of a New World, the Age of Space. By examining the history of the "old New World," perhaps we may find some guidance for the future. Although we cannot expect to find in the past all the answers to all the problems of our time, we do find in the story of America the courage, energy and intelligence of men who met the great challenges of their time. On the sound base of their character, America cannot help but build a future worthy of its past.
