Home Library Encyclopedia Topically Arrangged and Indexed Volume 8 The Nations of The World
The circumference of the earth is almost 25,000 miles. but in the first few decades of the 20th century this great distance was reduced from a journey of many months to one of a few days. Thus the peoples of countries separated by thousands of miles in a sense became neighbors. Moreover, thanks to the revolution in communications as well as in transportation, thev could talk to one another by telephone as readily as actual next-door neighbors. They also came to depend on one another more than ever before. A nuclear test in Nevada, a drought in Argentina, a mining discovery in South Africa, the construction of a new dam in Asia-any of these now affected the daily lives of people the world over.
Most of this volume is devoted to descriptions of the countries of the world, including every state. province and territorv of the United States and Canada, every other nation, and the important possessions and territories administered by them. The articles are arranged in geographical order so that the reader may get a better picture of a country and its neighbors, and therefore of a whole region. An alphabetical index is included at the front of the volume for readers who wish to look up a particular article, and at the end of each article is a summarv giving pertinent information for quick reference. There also are ten large maps in color. as well as many smaller maps especially made for this encyclopedia. The reader should note that more detailed discussions of various cultures appear in The Peoples of The World in Volume 10, while some 250 articles on history appear in Volumes 6 and 7.
In ancient times people singled out Seven Wonders of the World. In addition to these. we have included some wonders of the modern world-points of such interest that they deserve a fuller discussion than can be given in the articles about the country or countries where they are found. The final portion of this volume is devoted to government and law-how people in different times and places have solved the problems of men living together in communities. The very last article is devoted to the United Nations and the problems of maintaining peace, not only in one nation but among all nations.
