History, politics, literature, art, music. industry, philosophy-all are the stories of the men and women who made history, waged politics, wrote stories, painted pictures, composed symphonies, built businesses, developed philosophical systems. This book tries to tell briefly the stories of some of the best-known men and women, famous and infamous.
We chose to arrange this book in an unusual way. As the table of contents shows, the biographies have been grouped according to different pursuits, in categories such as Scientists and Inventors, Explorers and Adventurers, and so on. Within each group they are arranged chronologically, according to the year of birth. We have done this to make it easier to see what persons within each group were living and working at the same time and how they used the ideas of those who came before them.
Often it was not easy to decide in what group a person belonged. Napoleon, for example, was a great general. However, he also built a vast empire within which he made many political changes, and so we have put him with other Heads of State and Political Leaders. To find out about a particular person, see the Alphabetical Index at the front of the book.
After reading about that person. we hope you will go on to other pages, to read about other persons of his time who engaged in similar activities.
